Art 302: Alter Ego Proposal

I propose to wear my favorite color in the form of a suit. This would be an orange suit. I would wear this suit to visit with family, go out for drinks, spend a day running errands and going to lunch and making sure to be in it for more than 3 hours per day of wearing it. I will wear this because it is not the norm to see a person in an orange suit. I am anticipating reactions such as laughs and perhaps some staring. Super Bowl XLI Half-Time Press Conference Featuring PrinceUnknown-1Unknown

Art 302: Daily Dress Journal Day 10

Today I wore a very preppy look. I wore it to run errands and to do homework all day. Today’s look was all about small details. I wore a sweater with a “B” on it ($70), an embroidered pair of pants ($90), and a stripe bow tie ($40) all by Brooks Brothers, a shirt by Original Penguin ($70), and a pair of ankle boots in suede by H&M ($25). I felt happy wearing this outfit. The primary colors give it an upbeat feel. I can relate being preppy to the idea of identity presented in the reading about children and identity. “The process of identity formation, according to Erikson, is one in which the adolescent synthesizes and sheds previous identifications and introjections so that and integrated personal identity results” (Gonzalez, 196). I can relate to having found my inner prep as a child, and never letting to of that part of my identity. imageimageimageimageimageimage

Today I wore a “street style” appropriate look inspired by things I’ve seen on style blogs like lookbook.com. I wore a quilted bomber jacket from H&M ($20), a football jersey style shirt from H&M ($10), meggings I made myself, asos black shorts ($100), and white high top Jack Purcells. I can relate this look to finding my identity and the reading about identity. I also received some odd looks while at lunch. I wore this outfit to run errands, have lunch, and do homework. I felt very comfortable and stylish in this outfit.

Today I was casual, yet still work appropriate. I wore a black bomber jacket from H&M ($20), a black pair of H&M pants ($20), a grey tee with a print on it ($5), and my zig zag shoes. I wore this outfit to work, do homework, and go out for a few cocktails with my boyfriend. I received a compliment from a co-worker on my bomber jacket. I can relate this outfit to the reading about fitting in and blending in. Wearing all black kept me in uniform guidelines for work while staying monotone.

Today was an awful day. I had to go to work, volunteer after that, rush to the art supply store, and then do homework. I was feeling low all day and I believe my train of thought was reflected in my outfit. I wore a green hoodie from Target ($20), black pants from H&M ($20), a grey Versace Collection tee ($80), and a pair of suede and leather black wingtip boots from Florsheim ($150). These all made up my outfit. I did not receive any compliments today, but someone did ask why I was dressed so “butch” today (Ha!). I can’t relate this to a reading from class, but I can base it on prior readings about mood affecting outward appearance. Having worn this outfit all day, I also was cold when I left the place I volunteer at because my thin hoodie wasn’t warm enough to keep meat a comfortable temperature. Luckily for me it was only a 2 block walk.

Today I wore a very preppy look. I was inspired to wear my vintage Ralph Lauren bow tie from watching “Dynasty II: The Colbys” In the morning after waking up. I wore a very preppy look as the tie itself is very preppy. I wore my forest green pants from H&M ($10), light brown and tan Target vest ($25), brown and tan saddle shoes by Florsheim ($85), and my cream and tan stripe shirt by Original Penguin ($75). I can relate this again to the reading about identity and trying to to show my preppy side. I wore this look to school and to walk the dog.  A man in my art class toled me that I looked nice.

Today I wore a look inspired by my idol/role model: Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone’s character from my favorite movie Clueless). This look included a a white shirt ($20) and a black sweater ($20) both from H&M, a pair of shorts from Alexander Wang ($80), and a pair of black jack Purcells in black leather ($60). This was accessorised by the Rugby Ralph Lauren crest and a black pair of socks. I went to school, Target, the grocery store, did homework, and had a martini at the piano bar around the corner from where my boyfriend and I are. I got a compliment on my crest from the bartender. I think I mostly associate this look with the ready on identity and relating my preppy nature to the style of clothing I wear.

Today’s outfit was one I had to wear to multiple destinations. I wore an outfit completely by H&M, except for the shoes and tie. I wore a grey vest ($25), a blue textured dot shirt ($45), and a black pair of pants ($20). I accessorized the look with a J. crew silk tie ($45) that just so happens to be the tie I wore to my graduation day in High School. It is a classic golden yellow with a geometric floral pattern on it. The shoes were a pair of cap toe black leather shoes I bought yesterday ($50). I also had a camel colored scarf from Macys ($20) on in the morning because it was chilly. I was excited to break in my new shoes. My destinations included school, the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Brooks Brothers on Rodeo Drive, and a walk with my dog at home in Long Beach. For the first time since the commencement of this dress journal, I finally received a compliment on my outfit. The barista at Starbucks mentioned that he really liked my outfit and took special interest in my tie. I felt confident and slim in this outfit. The vest really does wonders in making my upper body appear smaller than it is! I can relate this to the video shown by Professor Lung on how the beauty and fashion industry drive such a glamorous message of being thin and young and how we strive to achieve such an appearance.

Art 156: CAFAM Visit

Nathalie Miebach is an artist who incorporates all of her passions into every artwork she makes. These passions being music, science, and of course art. The Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, California currently holds an exhibition of her work titled “Nathalie Miebach: Changing Waters”. This exhibit is home to artwork she has created focusing on the science of weather and the musical practices of composure and rhythm.
The artworks were all three dimensional and made from some very unconventional materials. Although they included paper, the paper source was printed weather data. This of course, being the science portion of her artwork. The musical compositions accompanied by each artwork was made from the same paper. And the rest of the materials used were raffia baskets and wood. It was very interesting that some were held down by rope as well. The most elaborate artwork in the exhibit was the center artwork, which was surrounded by all of the other works of art. It was called “To Hear An Ocean in a Whisper”. It was inspired by the natural processes of the gulf of Maine. It looks like a giant carnival scene. There’s a Ferris wheel, a swing ride, and a roller coaster present in the a work of art and of course, made from raffia, reed, wood, paper and rope. The artwork has a nice rhythm to it and is sort of a controlled chaos. It is very pleasing to the eye and is kept at a happy mood by supporting primary and bright colors. It was the first thing I saw in the exhibit and was very pleasing to the eye.
Another giant artwork was along the right hand wall from the entrance point of the exhibit. It included many objects including my favorite piece, a blue dragon made from woven raffia and paper. And the best part about this was it looked like a Chinese New Year parade on a wall. It was very exciting and had a contrasting orange dragon facing the blue dragon with a burst of firework in between the two dragons. This specific scene was very long and covered the better of one long wall and the accompanying two walls at each end of the long wall.
This exhibit inspired me through its color and processes. It was really interesting to see the use of reported printed data as a medium for a work of art. The concept of creating such fun and care free scenes of an amusement park or theme park rides from serious data is contrasting in thought. The child like color palette also contrasts the very sophisticated science behind the printed data charts that make up the artwork. I would respond to this exhibit by using similar colors, and perhaps using a scientific process of my own. Perhaps my passion for culinary arts would be science enough to bake, fry, or burn fabric and make a similar color palette would suffice as a project based on inspiration from this particular artist and exhibition.

Art 302: Daily Dress Journal #4

Today I had 2 different outfits on. The first outfit was one I wore while walking the dog, doing homework, and doing laundry. I wore  am H&M sweater with black leather elbow patches that cost about $25, the same knit pants from H&M as the day prior, and black Ugg boots at $120 a pair. The looks as topped off by a very full faux fur hat $20. I felt comfortable and warm in this. This made me think about the concise dictionary of dress and its definition of armor as protection or purposefully hiding something. M y hair was a mess and that hat did just that.

The second outfit was worn to go shopping and to cook with my boyfriend. I went to go shoe shopping and I wanted to wear something a bit more put together, as I never want to look like I need help with shopping while I’m in a store. I bought a pair of shoes for my mother, as well as a pair for myself. I wore an H&M grey blazer $50, an H&M blue button up shirt for $18, a pair of H&M black pants for $20, and a pair of Florsheim boots that cost around $150. I wore this to color block and to keep things in a cool color palette. I topped the look off with my favorite scarf that was made in Paris by a friend’s uncle. I have always loved this scarf as my closest friend in high school gave it to me our last christmas together in high school, and it was a custom piece. I would most closely associate this outfit with the reading on dressing to fit a social and economical norm, in this case, where I was shopping (Nordstrom).
